When students first essays learn to write, they’re often taught some form of the “five paragraph essay.” The five paragraph essay typically makes three related points, each featuring its own body paragraph. While this variety of rigid essay structure are a good idea for first time writers, it easily becomes predictable and boring. That’s why we’d like to provide a different style of essay writing. On this page we offer some general advice about the method that you can craft essays that are organic and natural. While structure is essential, we offer guidelines which can be flexible and be practical.
What’s important is there is no set rule on how paragraphs that are many may use for almost any section of your essay. In a long essay, your introduction might take up 2 or 3 paragraphs. Thank you for this resource that is outstanding that has helped my community college writing students due to their coursework. I do have a comment about the five-paragraph essay (5PE).
I would like to declare that this format should not automatically be written off. The 5PE can serve as “training wheels” for many hesitant writers (and certainly for students in developmental writing courses present in many community colleges). The formulaic nature of the rigid structure can help some writers understand both the big event of necessary essay elements and the purpose of organization in writing projects.
In addition, the 5PE can also offer some students a format from where they can find initial success with early writing projects. In other words, this format will help some students produce a well-organized written piece. (And for some writing that is developmental, this may be the very first time they have encountered success written down.)
Although I agree that students must be encouraged to maneuver beyond this structure, the 5PE can allow some struggling students to view themselves as college writers. This could easily lead to student growth; they can feel more comfortable taking greater risks and making more sophisticated rhetorical choices in their writing.

My hope is the fact that they will move on once they’re prepared to try out their writing. Personally, i did son’t realize till second year of university that i possibly could split a point that is single into multiple paragraphs. I once wrote a 10 page paper with only two body paragraphs! That’s the downside of these rigid methods of writing essays. ??
